With living expenses always on the up, you may be looking for some alternative ways to save on your household bills. One way you can do this is by giving some attention to the energy efficiency of your home. There may be a number of things you can do to improve energy efficiency, especially if you live in an older house. Here are a few suggestions:

Sealing and insulating are two of the ways you can dramatically improve the energy efficiency of your home. The attic is a good place to start. The attic door panel should have weatherstripping or foam board insulation which will prevent hot or cold air from escaping. There may be gaps and holes that you will need to seal up in attic spaces, such as under attic knee walls, where the attic meets the floor, and dropped ceiling areas. You should also look out for areas of insulation that appear darker than the rest, as this is a sign that air is escaping through small holes.

There are other parts of the house that will allow air to escape, and these areas will also need to be taken care of if you are to increase energy efficiency. These include window frames, doors, wall or window-mounted a/c units, baseboards, electrical outlets, and piping.

If you are looking to improve the energy efficiency of your home, why not take a look around it and see if there are any areas that would benefit from sealing and insulation?
