This time of year we are most likely to spend some extra time at home with family and friends. More time spent at home may increase the risk of an accidental house fire, so now is also a good time to check your home for potential fire hazards.

One essential fire safety device is a smoke detector. How many should a house have? The answer will depend on the size of the house, but, as a general guide, you need to have at least one smoke alarm on each livable floor of the home, including the basement and garage. Installing them in the bedrooms is also a good idea.

NEVER disconnect a smoke detector. It may be annoying when they go off every time you turn on the stove, but it is too easy to forget to reconnect them again, which will render them useless.

Have you tested your smoke detectors lately? If not, now would be a good time to go through the house and test each one to make sure they are in good working order.

Some other fire safety reminders
. If you enjoy an open fire in your home, be sure to remove any potentially combustible materials that are surrounding it before lighting the fire. Check that the flue is open. If you use string lights, check them for broken bulbs and frayed wires. Finally, never leave candles unattended or next to flammable materials.
