With spring almost upon us, now might be the perfect time to prepare a list of household tasks you will want to do before the hot summer months. Cleaning your central a/c system is a good job to add to the list. Here are a few tips on getting it cleaned up and ready to use:

Firstly, it is good to clear away all the dirt and debris that has no doubt accumulated around the outside of the unit during the winter months. After you have done this, remove the cover of the a/c unit and give it a good clean. Inside the unit, you will notice that there are hundreds of metal fins surrounding piping coils. These metal fins have a tendency to bend. If this happens, you can straighten them out using a tool called a fin comb. You may also want to oil the motor. But, before you do, check the operator’s manual to see what type of oil you should use.

Another important area to check is the drainage lines which should be in good shape, free of blockages, and securely attached to the unit. Remember that for the air conditioning unit to work properly, condensed water must be able to drain away from it.

Check all the filters. The a/c units’ filters play a vital role when it comes to indoor air quality, so they should be given a thorough cleaning, or if they are in bad shape, they should be replaced.

It is also a good idea to schedule a service on your central a/c system every year to ensure a well-maintained, well-functioning unit.
